Section 2: Evaluating Books That Support Disability Awareness

Your Path: Circle of Inclusion Home Page ""Accommodation, Accessibility, & Awareness "" Children's Books Review Guide "" Section 2

The purpose of this type of book is to support readers in raising their general awareness of disability and, in some cases, learning more specific information. The type of books that are the focus of this section of the manual should be used with great caution. These books should discuss a person’s disability in a positive and informative manner. Unlike the previous section, these books do talk about a child with a disability as having differences; however, they also should discuss the child’s similarities to other children.

This type of book should only be used in the classroom when the family, child, and school personnel support the need for and appropriateness of their use. If even one person feels that the use of this type of book may cause more harm by pointing out differences between children, then the book should not be used. The decision to use a book of this kind should be a team decision.

If the decision is made to use a book to help explain a specific disability, this section of the guide is intended to help to evaluate potentially useful books.
