How did you make the decision to have your child participate
in the program?
I observed and watched the Circle of Inclusion video. Upon observation,
I know this is the best place for my son. . . I couldn't find any of the
children with disabilities!
How have you been able to give input into how your child's needs
are met?
Through monthly team meetings. Once a month with the occupational therapist,
speech therapist, teacher, special education teacher, and other preschool
staff and me, of course.
Who are the ongoing participants on your child's IEP team?
His IEP is now carried out through the public school system. He started
kindergarten this semester and is also attending Raintree.
How are you communicated with on a daily or weekly basis?
Through a notebook, phone calls, and e-mail. This works well for everyone.
How has the program benefited your child?
The staff and the children don't see my son's disability; he's just
a little boy. He's allowed to choose learning tools and can work as
long as he likes. . . he's not shifted from task to task. He's achieved
so much, my words couldn't begin to describe.
Does your child have a special friend?
Yes, one special friend, that attends both his school and Raintree.
They have been friends for a couple of years. My son was invited to
his birthday party! I was delighted!
What advice would you give to other parents in placing their children
in inclusive programs?
Do what you feel is best for your child.
To what extent do you feel involved in the overall program?
The driving force. I've been involved with service providers and teachers
since he was three months old.
Raintree is the most magnificent program! I only wish he could continue
his elementary schooling there. No telling what my son could achieve
with the understanding, compassion, and intelligence the staff at Raintree
can provide!
