Enrollment of Children with Special Education Needs
Children who meet Head Start guidelines and state requirements for Early
Childhood Special Education and live in the prescribed neighborhood boundaries
are enrolled at Barkley preschool. Peer models are enrolled after applying/indicating
interest.
Development of the IEP or IFSP
The building team(parents, principal or assistant principal, Head Start
teacher, ECSE teacher and appropriate therapists) meet together to establish
the goals and objectives for the child.
Special Education Services at Barkley Preschool
The team meets weekly to determine weekly program delivery plans. At
this time, successes, needs and strategies are discussed relating to
the class in general and individual children. Special education related
services are delivered within the classroom setting as the child plays/works
in a variety of areas.
Individual Performance Evaluation
Data are taken continually through a system of anecdotal records and
are transferred to individual children's portfolios which include progress
in all areas of development and in particular the areas included on
the child's IEP. Criterion referenced testing is also used yearly to
determine the child's abilities in all domains.
Family Involvement in the Program
Teachers make monthly or semi-monthly visits to families, monthly parent
meetings and/or family social times occur so that all families and staff
can be involved with each other. We have gatherings at school and in
community locations (i.e. zoo, children's museum, libraries, parks).
Schedules
Schedules are posted in the office area of the preschool, for all related
service personnel. Notices of all official meetings are sent to all
team members.
Child Specific Accommodations in the Classroom
Specific child accommodations are recommended by the team, including
parents as needs arise. These are determined by formal assessment, informal
observations, and conversations among team members. The accommodations
are implemented by all staff members, as appropriate, and monitored
by specific therapists/teachers.
Program Funding
funding is provided by Head Start funds (Lincoln Public Schools is the
delegate) and local, state and federal funding of ECSE through Lincoln
Public schools.
Transportation for Children
Children may be transported by the school bus or parents may transport.
Both methods are used by the families of children in this classroom.
Inservice Training
Staff development training is provided several times yearly. Teachers
are also periodically provided the opportunity to attend regional and
national conferences. Classes on a wide variety of subjects are offered
through the school district and many teachers also take advantage of
university classes.
Peer Interactions
Teachers provide opportunities for all the children to become friends
by providing an environment that encourages interaction, by facilitating
communication and interaction throughout the day and during family social
times, and by direct intervention between and among children. We attempt
to provide time and opportunity for children to interact in multicultural,
diverse activities that foster an accepting, flexible attitude toward
one another.
