What is your educational background?
I have my bachelors and masters from Pittsburg State University. I am
returning to school to complete school psychology. I have had 18-19 years
experience as a school psychologist and two years as a paraprofessional.
What other experiences, or staff development has prepared you for
inclusion?
As a part of the original inclusive programming to begin at Parsons
USD in the 1980's and have continued in staff development and inservices.
What is your job role?
I evaluate preschool populations as well as kindergarten through 12th
grade. I collaborate with administrators, parents, and education staff
in completing play based/arena evaluations.
What is your role regarding the inclusive component of the program?
I provide the "family friendly" support during programming and transition
to other educational placements.
How has your role changed or have you adapted your role as it related
to the inclusive program?
My role has changed little, as the preschool population has always included
parents. Staff inclusion requires collaboration.
What were you biggest concerns about participating in an inclusive
program?
My biggest concern to me was letting go of my classroom. I would not
be in charge of my students in my class. The transitioning was also
a concern. It just takes time and patience!! The lack
of "quality" time with the children.
What were your experiences related to these concerns once inclusive
services were implemented?
I saw the acceptance of those students who may experience some delays
or behavioral concerns. Referrals through community based programming
requires trust among providers and special educators as interventions
may appear appropriate.
What do you see as the benefits of moving toward inclusive services?
For the children: acceptance by peers, development of positive personality
through modeling as they are exposed to a wide variety of educational
experiences.
For the staff: collaboration increases cooperation.
