What is your educational background?
I've been teaching for 15 years and have my masters in special education.
I've been teaching in full inclusive settings for five years.
What other experiences, or staff development has prepared you for
inclusion?
KITS program, inservice, and workshops have helped with inclusion.
What is your job role?
I'm a consultant teacher and help out in any manner I can.
What is your role regarding the inclusive component of the program?
I make sure the children are getting their goals and objectives covered
in the classroom. We work out their schedules and include everything
in their daily routine.
How has your role changed or have you adapted your role as it related
to the inclusive program?
I travel more and I don't have a classroom that I's responsible for.
My position is consulting and I have to be more adaptive to my schedule.
What were you biggest concerns about participating in an inclusive
program?
My biggest concern to me was letting go of my classroom. I would not
be in charge of my students in my class. The transitioning was also
a concern. It just takes time and patience!! The lack
of "quality" time with the children.
What were your experiences related to these concerns once inclusive
services were implemented?
I am used to the schedule and flexibility. I enjoy working in all the
centers and work with the teachers!
What do you see as the benefits of moving toward inclusive services?
The children are around normal developing children and have good role
models. The neatest thing is walking into an inclusive setting and a
person could not pick out a special needs child. This is a definite
benefit to inclusive services.
Can you offer one or more anecdotes which illustrate the benefits
of inclusion?
It takes a lot of patience, time, respect, adaptability, and flexibility
in inclusion. A person needs to have a good positive approach to inclusive
settings.
